Antipolo

Tayo na sa Antipolo
At doon maligo tayo
Sa batis na kung tawagi'y
Hi-hi-Hinulugang Taktak-tak.

I remember hearing this song as it played in the Camry's CD player. It's one of my mom's favorites along with an album of Philippine marching bands, Ted Ito's "Nais Kong Makapiling Ka" and a cassette recording of the Palm Sunday Mass. Go figure.

She would play this during the whole two and a half-hour drive from Batangas to Manila and back. (Well actually it goes after the rosary.) At the end of the trip, it feels like it's fiesta all over again!

Anyway, the reason for the song is because we're going to Antipolo this morning with Charo and her parents. It's an annual pilgrimage, she says. Every third Sunday of June, the whole Limaco clan would make the trek up to the land of suman and kasoy to visit and hear mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje). Lately, the attendance has not been that good. A lot of the old ones can't make it anymore and the kids have other stuff to do. Nonetheless, we're making this trip today to honor that tradition.

No, we won't be doing any bathing in the Hinulugang Taktak this year, and we don't plan on doing it in the coming years. It's already polluted, they said. We're just going there to visit the Shrine.

My memories of Antipolo when I was a kid were toy clay pots made with the red sticky earth of the area bought from the stalls outside the church. I remember my late tito Andy would help himself to some of the kasoy from vendors and end up not buying a single bag.

Today, Antipolo means a different thing to me after I took up cycling in high school. When you say Antipolo now, it reminds me of the suffering on trying to conquer the hill. It starts as soon as you turn right to Sumulong from Marcos highway until the old cycling tambayan near the mango trees. You might not end up racing for the local Tour, but it's a great place to get fit.

We have Neoprint!

We've been planning to have one for the longest time. It was in Sta. Lucia. There was a line and we're not that patient enough to wait for our turn. The next time, there was no one manning the booth. The last time we dropped by, it wasn't there anymore.

Anyway, after more than a year of planning to get one, we finally have Neoprint! I know, I know. This is so last century. So what? Inggit lang kayo! Hahahahaha! This one is taken from one of their stalls near the ticket booth in Eastwood, Libis.

For Sale: Sony Ericsson T610
After six months, I'm selling my Sony Ericsson T610 unit. The reason for selling? I've got a Nokia 6600, thanks to Charo.

I bought her a Nokia 6230 for her birthday (see previous blog entries for more), so her "old" unit is now with me.

As Kris Aquino would say, "I'm so masa na." Shucks!

Anyway, if you're interested or you know anyone who is, here's the scoop:

6-month old Sony Ericsson T610 for P9,000 (fixed)

- Stock black and silver casing with minor scratches
- Perfect working condition.
- Tri-band, MMS, GPRS, Java and Bluetooth-capable handset
- Built-in digital camera
- Loaded with 60+ polyphonic ringtones and a number of Java games and applications
- Comes with the original stuff - box, manual, handle, CD, plastic bags, and even the sticker on the screen!
- EXTRA! As an added bonus, I'm including my handsfree headset, car charger and thememaker software

Keeping up with our theme for this week, here's another cycling news for everyone.

Lance Armstrong and his team has new sponsor come next season. As the contract with the United States Postal Service expires at the end of this year, expect to see the blue train wearing the colors of the Discovery Channel till 2007. They will be called the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team.

For more on the story, click here.

It seems the book, "LA Confidential: The Secrets of Lance Armstrong" is causing a lot of uproar in the cycling community. I've been reading several articles about it. There's this one that I particularly like. It's written by Scott Sunderland:

I honestly can't work out what benefit writing a book like this about Lance Armstrong will achieve - except make the writers a shitload of money, what's the point?

I hope that the readers of Cyclingnews don't buy his book because I have the feeling it's all about money, the timing picked to publish it says enough don't you think? Cycling has been at the brunt of too many scandals - while other sports are getting away with a lot worse. I agree, some of them have deserved to come out, but most have been sensational.

Too many people are hanging on Lance Armstrong, he is such an inspiration to so many people, in and outside the sport. We need guys like Lance; really, people need to stop "killing" their heroes!

Spreading the Word
With all these things going on in the sport, it's a pleasant surprise to hear that cycling has a new ambassador, Charo. I was in the dinner table yesterday, and she was telling me how she explained the mechanics of a stage race to one of her friends at work, Ada, who just finished reading Lance's first book, It's Not About the Bike." Aawwwww.

Also on speading the word, I feel Blogger's in-house comment box isn't as effective as its third-party counterparts. Admittedly, it's better security for the blog owner, but a potential commenter(?) would lose his interest once he finds out he has to login with his Blogger account (or sign-up if he doesn't have one). In my experience, commenting on blogs is a spur of the moment kind of thing. Again, a usability issue for Jakob Nielsen fans.

We Need You Back!
Yahoo! is getting into the act. With people moving to Google's Gmail service and others clamoring for invites to get the 1GB email storage space, Yahoo Mail is now upgrading their service's storage space from the stock 4MB to 100MB. Would this bring back those who made the exodus to Googleland?

6:30 PM

Proving the negative
Something is brewing up here. With less than a month to go before his bid for a record-breaking 6th Tour de France title, Lance Armstrong is filing a case against David Walsh, Pierre Ballester, and their publishers for libel.

Walsh and Ballester are the co-authors of the soon-to-be-released "L.A. Confidential: The Secrets of Lance Armstrong," a book which accuses the five-time Tour de France champion of using banned performance enhancing drugs.

Lance denies the allegation. According to him, he has never failed a drug test in all his years in the sport.

Technically, the burden of proof should be in the shoulders of these authors, but this is not so in real life. Sadly, in a sport tainted by doping, this rests on the accused.

I just took a dump when I heard a peculiar sound coming from one of the cubicles - someone is sleeping in the men's room and he's snoring! Talk about power naps! Yebah! Hehehehe!

Victim #2
I knew Charo would take the bait! Hehehehe! Yesterday's fake post on getting her a gift from National bookstore was very effective. In fact, it was so good that she got pissed with the idea of me not preparing for her birthday and cramming to get a gift from National. She didn't expect that I would give her a Nokia 6230. So you could imagine how shocked she was when I showed it to her. Hehehehe!

I'd like to wish my honey a very happy birthday! She just turned... umm... twenty something today! Hehehehe!

Today is meeting day, and I'm finished with my first of three meetings. Next in line is a lunch meeting at Dish, and the good part is it's free! Now I have to donate my baon to someone who needs it.

I'm in the office early today, because I plan on leaving early. It's goodbye office after the company general assembly at 4pm. I'll do a slight detour at National Bookstore to get her a gift and then it's off to birthday girl's place.

I didn't open my trunk to the guard in the parking lot. I see no point in this exercise and, quite frankly, it's just a waste of our time. To those building administrators who are reading this, I beg you please to think this up - why do you assign your guards to check our trunks if we could have the thing you're looking for in our back seat or maybe even on our laps? I'm puzzled how this "security measure" should make us feel safe when all of us know it's half-baked.

May pangakong taglay ang 2004 para sa akin. I know that it's almost mid-year, but I can feel it coming. I'm excited. I can't wait.

On another note, count one more person joining Nicole aboard the first train out of this company - Janice. Yup, that's right. After more than a year of tenure in this company, she called it quits. I just read the news this morning from her blog. Such is life. As Gerry said, "panapanahon lang 'yan."

Moby beat me in today's race to 15 lunch foosball match. Darn! I knew I should've retired when I was on top. It doesn't matter. Now, I will train again in the mountains of Quebec and make my comeback to regain my championship crown. Mark my words.

In our first-ever race to 15, I emerged the champion. Yes! Finally, those years of training in the mountains of Quebec paid off! Bwahahahahaha!

Signs
Signs are good. They guide you. They tell you stuff. But no matter how effective they are, they remain as suggestions. In the end, it's up to the person to make the decision.

I've been seeing good signs lately from both ports. Now I'm waiting for them to connect. We'll see what we're going to do from there.
